Six years training started with a BSc Degree in Quantity Surveying at the Polytechnic of Central London, followed by three years at Reynolds & Young Chartered Quantity Surveyors carrying out pre-contract and post-contract services for various projects including St Albans Abbey and the College of Arms. This led to election as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor in February 1984 and was followed by a move into project management for large building contracts including listed buildings in Marlow, Egham and London. From 1988, freelance work led to establishment of the current private practice specialising in listed buildings.

Three years of extra training started in 1998 with a Diploma in Building Surveying at the College of Estate Management in Reading, leading to the additional designation of Chartered Building Surveyor in 2000. In addition the RICS Post-graduate Diploma in Building Conservation, also at the College of Estate Management, was completed in 2001. Since then, continuous training has included residential building conservation courses at the Weald and Downland Museum, the Scottish Lime Centre Trust and West Dean College. Stuart is also a member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Building Limes Forum.
